Woodcarving Displays Wow

The 30th Annual State of Maine Sportsman’s Show on April 2-4, at the Augusta Civic Center is sponsoring wildlife carving display that is open to all carvers.
The competition includes four classes: 1) Novice, 2) Intermediate, 3) Open and 4) Master. Entries cost $5, $6, $7 and $10 respectively for the four classes.
The contest also has three major categories: 1) Working Decoys, 2) Miniatures and 3) Natural Finish. Working Decoys will be an open class. Miniatures are carvings that are half-life size. Any piece over half life size will be judged in the life-size category. The term “Natural Finish” means that the wood grain must show through the finish. Limited texturing and/or burning will be permitted as well as natural wood staining. The use of any paint is prohibited in this last category.
Official species designations include waterfowl (all ducks, geese and swans), upland-game birds (doves, grouse, pheasants, pigeons, quail and turkeys), shorebirds (avocets, coots, cranes, flamingos, gallinules, godwits, herons, ibises, limpkins, oystercatchers, plovers, rails, sandpipers, snipes, stilts, storks and woodcocks), seabirds (auks, boobies, cormorants, frigates, grebes, gulls, jaegers, loons, pelicans, petrels, shearwater, skimmers, terns, tropic birds and puffins), raptors (eagles, falcons, hawks, owls and vultures), mammals (all species, including whales and dolphins), fish (all species) and songbirds (all the usual ones).
There will be 88 ribbons awarded for 22 different judgings. First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention ribbons will be given to the 22 categories.
Only carvings done since last year’s State of Maine Sportsman Show can be entered. Entries can be delivered to the show management at the Civic Center on Thursday, April 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday, April 2 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Each one will be given a number and placed on display. Any names or markings must be covered with tape.
Ribbons are awarded on the following criteria: technique of carving and painting (sculpturing), conformation (anatomical correctness), feather pattern and coloration, interpretation of subject and degree of difficulty. Cash prizes will be awarded to Judges Best of Show ($50) and Master Class ($30).
All entries must stay on display until Sunday, April 4 between 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
